DC Core vs DigitalOcean: managed cloud or Droplets?

DigitalOcean Droplets are developer-friendly cloud virtual machines with simple provisioning and published unit prices. DC Core packages infrastructure with an agreed managed operating boundary for organisations that do not want to administer each server and surrounding control themselves.

Scope: this guide compares DC Core managed cloud with DigitalOcean's core Droplet IaaS product, plus Private Droplets, Cloud Firewalls, Droplet backups and support plans. DigitalOcean App Platform, managed databases, Cloudways and other managed products use different responsibility models and are outside this comparison.

A fair caveat: DigitalOcean is not limited to public, unmanaged VMs. Private Droplets have no direct public connectivity, and App Platform, managed databases and Cloudways use more managed delivery models. Can DigitalOcean Droplets run without public connectivity?

Yes. Private Droplets use VPC-only networking and no public interface. DigitalOcean documents bastion or peered-VPC patterns for administrative access and NAT for outbound internet access.

Are DigitalOcean backups included automatically?

Droplet backups are an optional paid feature with several frequency and retention models. Buyers must enable the appropriate plan and decide how restores and application-consistent recovery will be tested.
